Since we moved into this house a year and a half ago, our bedroom has been an absolute wreck, and I've been dragging my feet on doing anything about it. It's just sort of become the place where all unwanted possessions get shoved. You know the room, the one guests are never permitted to enter. And if you're like me, once it's already a mess, that mess just multiplies until it's out of control and we look like we're living in a college dorm. Well that all began to change the moment I laid eyes on this bed from LuLu & Georgia. When I first saw it, trumpets sounded and angels began singing in chorus as a light shone down upon it, as if to say, "It is I, the bed of your dreams." Needless to say, I was a little more than slightly elated when LuLu & Georgia agreed to work with me and jumpstart my bedroom transformation!
Like I said, this is just the beginning with this whole space update. Outside the frame of these photos is still a college dorm room. But this bed is just the inspiration I needed to get this process going! As for what's next for the room, I've got some decisions to make. We still need lights, nightstands, a dresser, a rug, window treatments, a new mattress (cause we're old and our backs hurt), and bedding, but I mean, come on, this bed!!! This is a heck of a good place to start. And to those of you who have never had an upholstered headboard, you don't know what you're missing. I will never again be without an upholstered headboard if I can help it. I am loving having something cushy to lean against while watching all the Hulus.
The kids are big fans as well. Of course, there could just be a mattress lying in the floor in our room (as there has been for a few weeks), and they would still prefer to be there over any other place in the house. There's just something so appealing about the parents' bed. Let's face it, when you have a family, the master bed is more literally a family bed. And it's certainly not just a bed. It's a fort, a trampoline, a movie theater, a time-out, an infirmary, and a respite from nightmares.
It is my goal for our bedroom to be a peaceful retreat for Heath and me but also a space where my kids feel comfortable. We may now cross "trampoline" off the list of its uses, but other than that, I want our bed and room to feel approachable to them and to continue serving its many purposes. Hopefully they will remember us all piling up and laughing and wrestling and then crying cause someone got a knee to the mouth but quickly laughing again cause the fun is such a great distraction. Hopefully they will remember us inviting them in rather than always shooing them away, which we do our fair share of, by the way. Sometimes I need them to go to their quarters and me to mine, but I surely don't want it to be because my room is too precious of a place for the likes of children. I want us to continue to congregate here, just with less junk and a more peaceful ambiance.
I will certainly never look back on these years with babies and children and regret opening my space to them. I'm sure I will regret much, but I will never, ever regret that.
This bedroom/family room update was a long time coming for us. After years of sleeping on a rickety, hand-me-down bed frame and mattress and existing with limited storage and scant visual appeal, I cannot wait for it to feel less cluttered, more calm, and complete! I mean, I'm no fool. Laundry piles will still be a constant up in here, but at least I might enjoy the folding process a little more. And for me, when a room feels complete, it is somehow so much easier to keep clean!
So what's next for the space? I'm trying to decide what direction I want to go. Do I want to keep it kind of monochromatic with the bed being the star of the show? Or should I add some fun color? You know I like some color! Even though the bed is patterned, it really is sort of a neutral with all kinds of possibilities, and I'm not exactly certain what I want to do! Tell me what to do! But regardless of what's next, this bed is pretty darn perfect on its own.
Be sure and go check out all LuLu & Georgia has to offer. They've got some really special stuff happening over there right now, complete with sounding trumpets and singing angels ;) Shop some of my favorites below!
